UNICEF-SHCEK Project

Turkish Government and UNICEF carry out the “Children First: Modeling Child Protection Mechanisms at Provincial Level” project with the overall objective of strengthening the capacity of institutions for the protection of children. The purpose of the project is to establish effective, coordinated working mechanisms including monitoring and evaluation for the delivery of effective and integrated preventive and protective, child-centered protection services. The project covers 12 provinces. SAM offers consultancy services to run the project.

The Masculinity Project

A major goal of the project titled The Social Construction and Developmental Trajectories of Masculinities is to fill a scientific void in Turkey regarding this issue and to contribute to the relevant body of literature. By posing such questions as “What is masculinity?” “How does it develop?” “What different forms does it take?” and “What are the social process through which it is constructed and reinforced?”, the study aims to understand both the societal as well as the developmental background of masculinities. By addressing the issue of how men construct their identities throughout their developmental trajectories starting with the socialization process in the family, we are hoping to unpack the different layers that contribute to masculine identities over time.

This project started in March 2009. It was conducted under the auspices of the Turkey Health Transformation Program sponsored by the World Bank with a view as to enhance the capacities of the Social Security Institution. The project was carried out nationwide in 12 regions and 12 provinces.

Satisfaction Survey is Starting

The Social Security Institution Beneficiary Satisfaction Survey aims to discern beneficiary satisfaction levels of certain participants who receive monthly pensions from the General Directorate of Non-Contributory Payments in accordance with law number 2002. Participants in question are disabled beneficiaries, their kin and old people. The project is conducted under the auspices of the Turkey Health Transformation Program sponsored by the World Bank with a view as to enhance the capacities of the Social Security Institution.
Household Health Survey

The Family Medicine Practice is being implicated as a part of the Turkey Health Transformation Program sponsored by the World Bank. SAM’s Household Health Survey is intended to evaluate how the Family Medicine Practice is implicated and its results in the two pilot provinces of Erzurum and Sivas. A total of 6000 interviews will be conducted in the two provinces. The fieldwork is carried out under the supervision of Drs. İsmail Şahin and Hacer Özgen (Hacettepe University) and aims to evaluate household expenditure on health, practices in seeking health services, consumer habits and satisfaction. The second part of the project is due to commence in October 2009.
2007 Parliamentary Elections Election Day

SAM conducted Election Day research to achieve early forecasting of Turkish parliamentary election results. SAM chairman, Cenap Nuhrat, announced the study findings on NTV immediately upon the lifting of the broadcast ban on Election Day. Official results showed that no parties had scored more than 1 percentage point above or below the SAM forecast.
The Bağcılar Study is Completed

The Bağcılar Municipal Census and Household Survey has been completed. The study included interviews in 152.000 households and we were able to gather information on 650 thousand participants.

The Bağcılar Municipal Census and Household Survey has begun. 25 people work in the project office set up in Bağcılar and 200 interviewers work in the field. Interviews are conducted through hand-held computers and all data verification is achieved electronically.
